What makes a pushbutton waterproof?
A waterproof pushbutton – also referred to as a waterproof push switch or waterproof switch – combines a sealed front section with a robust actuation mechanism. The key factors are the IP rating, the type of actuation and the materials used.
Depending on the design, the pushbutton is either sealed only at the front (typical for control panels and cabinets) or fully protected – up to IP69K for applications with high-pressure and steam-jet cleaning.
Front-side base protection
Dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion. A common standard for the front side of industrial pushbuttons in machinery and HMI panels.
Permanent wet conditions
Protection against continuous immersion under manufacturer-specified conditions – e.g. for permanently wet areas.
High-pressure cleaning
The highest water protection rating – for control elements in food, beverage and vehicle environments with intensive cleaning.
Actuation types
Mechanical pushbuttons with a sealed stroke are the established standard. Piezo pushbuttons operate without a moving front surface, making them particularly rugged and wear-resistant. Capacitive controls react to touch – ideal for smooth, easy-to-clean surfaces.
Switching function & material
Momentary for short impulses (start, reset), latching for permanent on/off states. Common front materials include stainless steel (corrosion-resistant, robust) and high-quality plastics – optionally with LED illumination and symbol engraving.

Open categorySelection guide: what matters with a waterproof pushbutton
The right form factor depends on the application, environment and operation. The following criteria help with the initial selection:
Mounting diameter
Common sizes are 16, 19 and 22 mm. The choice is guided by the existing cut-out, operating comfort and desired labelling.
Switching function
Momentary for pulse signals (start/reset) or latching for on/off states – matched to the control system.
Actuation type
Mechanical pushbutton, piezo pushbutton (without a moving front) or capacitive control element – depending on ruggedness and cleaning requirements.
Illumination
LED illumination in various colours and symbols for status or function display – optional as a ring or full-area design.
Material & front
Stainless steel for corrosive and hygienic environments, rugged plastics for standard applications. Symbol or text engraving available on request.
IP rating
IP67 as base protection, IP68 for permanently wet areas, IP69K for high-pressure cleaning. The rear side must also match the installation situation.
Termination type
Screw, solder or plug-in termination – optionally combined with a waterproof cable assembly.
Environmental conditions
Temperature range, chemicals, UV exposure and mechanical stress all feed into the design.
Typical applications & industries
Waterproof pushbuttons and switches are used wherever controls need to be reliably protected against moisture, dust, cleaning agents or vandalism:
- Machinery & industrial automation (start/stop, emergency-stop peripherals)
- Control panels and HMI interfaces
- Outdoor applications and elevator/door controls
- Vehicle manufacturing, commercial and special-purpose vehicles
- Food & beverage industry (IP69K wash-down areas)
- Medical & laboratory technology
- Rail, water and environmental technology
- Public terminals and vandalism-prone areas
A good match: waterproof connectors for the associated cabling and Rugged Components & Solutions for particularly demanding applications.
