Understanding IP ratings: IP67, IP68 and IP69K
Waterproof connectors – also referred to as watertight plugs or waterproof cable connections – reliably protect sensitive contacts from moisture, dust and cleaning agents. Choosing the right IP rating according to IEC 60529 is essential.
Temporary immersion
Dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water. Typical for outdoor applications, machinery and control cabinets.
Continuous immersion
Protection against continuous immersion under manufacturer-specified conditions. For permanently wet areas and humid environments.
High-pressure & steam jet
Highest water protection – even during high-pressure cleaning with hot water. Typical in food, vehicle and cleaning environments.
The basic principle of a waterproof connection is the combination of a housing seal, a circumferential sealing lip and a locking mechanism (e.g. screw, push-pull or bayonet), which together ensure the required IP rating in the mated state. Unmated connectors generally do not reach the specified IP rating – protective caps help in that case.

Selection guide: what matters with waterproof connectors
The right connector always depends on the specific application. The following criteria help with the initial selection:
Size & series
Common industrial series such as M9, M12 or larger circular connectors – depending on available space and the type of signal transmitted.
Pole count
From 2-pole signal and power connections to multi-pole fieldbus and Ethernet variants.
Current rating
Sized according to the rated current and voltage of the application – including temperature derating.
Locking
Screw, push-pull or bayonet locking – determines mating cycles, assembly time and vibration resistance.
Coding
Common on M12 (A, B, D, X and others): coding prevents mismating and is matched to the signal type.
IP rating
IP67, IP68 or IP69K – depending on humidity, immersion and cleaning conditions in use.
Typical applications & industries
Waterproof connectors are used wherever moisture, dust or cleaning agents can jeopardise electrical connections:
- Industrial automation & machinery (sensors, fieldbus, drives)
- Outdoor and solar installations
- Vehicle construction & commercial vehicles
- Food & beverage industry (IP69K wash-down areas)
- Measurement & control technology
- Rail, water and environmental technology
- Medical & laboratory technology
- HVAC and building technology
